Oscars 2014

Earlier this week at the Oscars Ellen tweeted a photo that has since gotten the most re-tweets in the history of Twitter (currently 3,135,835 re-tweets). If you haven't already noticed, I took the liberty of doctoring this photo a bit. I was able to add myself to this image using the free online image editor Pixlr.com. Pixlr can be used by teachers and students in a multitude of subject areas. For example, in a social studies classroom you can apply filters in order age modern day photos to give them an antique look. You could also take historical or scientific "selfies" where you take a famous person's likeness and paste them into a relevant background or context as seen below and originating in a post on the Bionic Teaching website:

Historical Selfies

Elemenatary ITRT Tyler Hart created a ActivInspire Instagram template that you can download here to use with your class. There is also a pretty cool site called Histograms that uses a similar concept.

Mrs. Lewis' class is beginning their ad campaigns where they will need to create professional looking advertisements. Photoshop works well for this process, but I think Pixlr is more user friendly and less intense on system resources. I created a Google Site that houses some basic resources for those looking to get started using Pixlr. - https://sites.google.com/a/henrico.k12.va.us/pixlr/home

I really enjoy using Pixlr. As a matter of fact, all of the graphical text and image editing on this blog was created via. Pixlr. I am not entirely sure how such a quality product can be offered as a free service, but I am extremely glad that is the case.
