Google Tone - Share Links Using Sound

Google has released a new extension that allows teachers to share URL's and links with the students using sound. Just like a human voice, the computer must be within earshot of the tone for this to work. If you are tying to use this feature with an entire class you will need to hook your computer up to a pair of speakers. For this to work, both the teacher and the students they teach will need to install the Google Tone Extension. Once installed, open the website you would like to share and click on the megaphone icon in Chrome.

It will play a series of beeps and the student computers will receive a notifier that a link has been shared with them. My wife sent me a link via. Google Tone from her computer last night as we were sitting in our family room. Here is what the notifier looks like:

To open the web address you simply click on the notifier. I have not attempted to try this with an entire class yet, but theoretically it should work. As long as all of the computers in your classroom can hear the sound coming from your computer after having clicked the Google Tone Icon in Chrome. Please remember; for this to work every student in your class will need to install the Google Tone extension from the Chrome web store as well.
