Ever register for a web 2.0 product using the email fake@fake.com? I know I have, but what about those sites that ask you sign-up with a working email address since they require email verification prior to using their product? I hate giving out my personal email address for fear of getting spammed from now until eternity. Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem and it comes in the form of Mailinator.com. Mailinator is my go to inbox for those times I need a valid, working, email address. This is also a great solution to use with students in your class who may not have an email account, but need one in order to use the latest and greatest Web 2.0 tool.
How Does It Work?
When you discover a website that requires you register with a valid email address, you simply register using any name@mailinator.com naming convention. For example, I might type in the email address holmanitrt@mailinator.com. When I finish registering, Mailinator will automatically create an inbox for me when any and all email is sent to that specific address. In order to check my inbox I just go to the website: www.mailinator.com and type holmanitrt (or the name you registered with) in the Check Your Inbox field and click the check it button. This will give me access to the inbox where I can confirm receipt of the email. This is absolutely free, and no sign up is required. Just keep in mind that this is a public link that anyone who happens upon it can view. If sensitive information was sent to your mailinator inbox, it might be wise to delete the email after having read it.
